There are two introductory leadership courses available to pharmacy students. These include:
Phar 6237 Leading Change in Pharmacy I (2 credits, fall)
Phar 6238 Leading Change in Pharmacy II (2 credits, spring)
These courses cover foundational concepts and skills in leadership. Phar 6237 works with Strengthsfinder, introduces the change process and visioning and exercises communication skills and relationship building skills. The Fred Factor and Now, Discover your Strengths are two resources that are used. Phar 6238 goes more in depth with the change process and elaborates on the leader's role in change. Participants continue with communication and relationship skill building. Our Iceberg is Melting and Leadership & Self Deception are two resources that are used.
In addition, students particularly interested in leadership can elect to participate in the Leadership Emphasis Area. Similar to the existing Research Emphasis Area, this is an 18 credit opportunity which includes classroom and experiential education, in order to receive the transcript notation on graduation.
A plan for the Leadership Emphasis Area has been developed and was approved by the Educational Policy Committee in December 2007. It will be reviewed by the full faculty this spring. The Leadership Emphasis Area includes a research project, a leading change project, participation in parts of the Leadership Best Sellers program ( http://ce.pharmacy.umn.edu/courses/lbs_short.html) and completion of a Leading Change Portfolio, as well as a management course and a management/leadership APPE.
